Premchand Rangshala is the premier indoor auditorium in the City. It is one of the well known venue for theater artist in the State. It was set up by Government of Bihar in 1971 and among the biggest theatres in Eastern India. After 1972, no play was staged at the auditorium and in 1974 it was handed over to Central Reserve Police Force . In 1987, the auditorium was freed from CRPF after sustained pressure applied by the cultural activists. Thereafter, plays were staged at regular interval. In 2011, the theater went a major renovation and suspension. The overall renovation cost was estimated about ₹5.91 crore. By the year 2012, 100 more seats were added as against existing capacity to accommodate 500 and the theater’s structure were improved too. After renovation, the state-of-art theatre was inaugurated in February 2012 by the Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar. Art and Culture department of Bihar and Sangeet Natak Akademy (academy for music, dance and drama) has good news for art lovers in the town; the department will soon build an open-air stage at Premchand Rangshala, Patna. The free space at Premchand Rangshala will be used for the construction of the stage. Bihar Sangeet Natak Akademy has given green signal to this project and has forwarded it to Art and Culture department of Bihar for approval. Once the department gives the project a green signal, the construction will begin. The open-air stage will be built as per Vastu. According to the officials of the academy, the open-air stage will be able to accommodate 200 people at a time. At present, only Bhartiya Nritya Kala Mandir has an open-air stage. The condition of the stage at Nritya Kala Mandir is not good, which is a huge disappointment for artists. The rehearsal room will be constructed for artist where they will even be able to keep their instruments. “A rehearsal room will be constructed here, with the help of barricades and shades, small cubicles will be made for artists who will perform at the Rangshala. Institutions that lack support and equipment will be given preference here. Initially, the cubicles will be allotted for one year but later on it will depend on the performance of the artist,” said Alok Dhanwa, director of the academy. The academy has also decided on constructing a cafeteria in the premises, where tea and snacks will be available at reasonable price.

The best place for cultural events in Patna... It is a governmental auditorium.. There are many theatre groups regularly working there. It is also nice for them who want to learn acting, get trained, with very low budget (app. 500 per month) So you can join any group working there .....
