  The American college is one of the oldest colleges present in India, Affiliated to Madurai Kamarajar University. It was found in 1881. The Saracenic style red-brick building was constructed by the British architect Henry Irwin.( who built the Mysore palace ) In 1919 Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore visited the American college and delivered serious of lectures. Till now the American college Madurai one of the finest colleges in Tamil Nadu. The unique joint bachelor’s degree on Religion, Philosophy and Sociology can be found only in the American College.
